Gastric Sleeve Surgery/Tube Gastrectomy

Gastrectomy or Gastric Banding: Which procedure is preferred method for obesity surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is one of the newer types of bariatric (obesity) surgery. This surgery can also be referred to as sleeve gastrectomy, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, tube gastrectomy and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

During this procedure the surgeon removes about 85 percent of the stomach so that it takes the shape of a tube or sleeve. This operation is performed laparoscopically, meaning that the surgeon makes small incisions as opposed to one large incision.

The tube-shaped stomach that is left is sealed closed with staples. Because of the reduction of the size of stomach there is significant restriction in the intake of certain foods and hence limits the amount of food that an obese person was eating in his routine.

Gastrectomy or Gastric Banding: Which procedure is preferred method for obesity surgery?

Both the sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric banding are simple and safe procedures to lose weight in a permanent way. We find that weight loss is probably better after sleeve gastrectomy and also the quality of life in post bariatric surgery period is relatively good after sleeve gastrectomy than gastric banding. However, a comparison of the two procedures is given in the following table which definitely will be of value for the bariatric surgery candidates.

Therefore the sleeve gastrectomy is a better choice if you:

  • want a significant weight loss
  • are concerned about the changes in eating and quality of life in post weight loss surgery
  • are scares of extensive postoperative follow up
